Former MP Datta Meghe Dies at 89 After Cardiac Arrest
Nagpur, March 22, 2026: Datta Meghe, a veteran politician from Maharashtra and former Member of Parliament, died on Sunday following a cardiac arrest. He was 89. His son and MLA Samir Meghe confirmed the news.
Meghe, a prominent figure in state and national politics for decades, had served multiple terms in the Lok Sabha representing Wardha and was also a member of the Rajya Sabha between 2002 and 2008.
Born in 1936 in Wardha district, Meghe’s political career spanned several decades across parties, including the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party and later the Bharatiya Janata Party. He also served as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council for multiple terms.
Beyond politics, Meghe was widely known for his contributions to education and healthcare. He founded and nurtured a network of institutions under the Datta Meghe group, including medical colleges, engineering institutes and hospitals, particularly in rural Maharashtra, aimed at expanding access to affordable education and medical services.
His death marks the end of an era in Vidarbha’s political and educational landscape, where he was regarded as a key institution builder.
Meghe is survived by his family, including Sameer Meghe, an MLA, and other children.
