Fire Safety Week is being celebrated on a pilot basis at Koradi Thermal Power Station in Nagpur district.
On this occasion, a grand fire safety awareness campaign was organized with great enthusiasm and celebration at Koradi Thermal Power Station from 14th to 20th April 2026. This week is being celebrated across the country in memory of the fire brigade personnel who were martyred in the devastating explosion at Mumbai Port on 14th April 1944. The main objective of this week is to create awareness about fire safety among the public, pay tribute to their sacrifice and give the message that ‘prevention is the best solution against fire’.
With the aim of paying homage and gratitude to the brave fire fighters who died in the fire service, and also to strengthen the resolve for safety by taking inspiration from their sacrifice, the week was inaugurated by the Chief Engineer of the Centre, Mr. Sudeep Rane on 14th April. All the officers, employees, contractual workers and citizens present took the oath of fire safety. This year, many activities were planned and organized under the slogan “Safe Schools, Safe Hospitals and a Safety Conscious Society – Together for Fire Prevention”. From 14th to 18th April, fire fighting demonstrations were organized by various departments at the power station, Vidyut Vihar Colony, as well as schools and hospitals in the area. In these demonstrations, detailed guidance was given on the proper use of fire extinguishers, how to respond immediately in case of fire, how to protect lives and property, and what precautions to take in an emergency. By directly participating in these demonstrations, the employees and citizens understood the importance of fire safety.
In addition, various competitions were organized for officers, employees, contract workers and their families to further increase public awareness. The message of fire safety was effectively conveyed through painting, essay, slogan and rangoli competitions. These competitions received immediate response from all levels. The winners were felicitated by eminent personalities at the closing ceremony.
The Fire Service Week concluded on 20th April under the chairmanship of Chief Engineer Mr. Sudeep Rane. In his presidential address, he clarified that fire safety is not just a formality but should become an integral part of everyone’s daily life and work culture. He also stressed on the need for everyone to be more vigilant and strictly follow safety rules to prevent fire incidents. He appealed to everyone to work together by taking responsibility for their own safety and that of their colleagues.
It was stated that the various activities organized during this week have helped a lot in creating awareness about fire safety and these activities have been effective in creating a safe workplace and a responsible society.
Deputy Chief Engineers Mr. Bhaskar Ingle and Mr. Shailendra Kasulkar, Superintendent Engineers Smt. Kiran Nanvatkar, Mr. Sachin Bhagewar, Mr. Rajesh Dakhole, Smt. Sarika Sontakke and Mr. Manoj Ump along with a large number of Heads of Departments, Engineers, Employees, Family Members and Contract Workers were present.
The programme was moderated by Junior Fire Officer Mr. Sagar Kharwade, while Deputy Chief Fire Officer in-charge Mr. Dnyaneshwar Kalamba delivered the introductory speech. The concluding ceremony successfully concluded the week-long activities and created a new experience for all regarding fire safety.
It is noteworthy that during the Fire Service Week (April 14-20), several artistic and practical experiments are being organized to spread awareness about fire fighting and fire safety. The aim of these programmes is to alert the general public and teach them how to stay safe in emergency situations.
The main artistic and practical experiments conducted during the Fire Service Week include:
Firefighters conduct mock drills in schools, markets and crowded places. They provide hands-on training on how to safely extinguish fires involving gas cylinders, electrical appliances and other flammable materials.
Use of modern technology: Firefighters at thermal power plants across the states have started firefighting demonstrations using drones and robots. These drones carry water, fire extinguishing powder or equipment to help control fires in hazardous areas.
Artistic science experiments: To educate children on fire safety, an experiment is conducted to make a ‘homemade fire extinguisher’ using vinegar and baking soda. The carbon dioxide produced from it extinguishes a candle, and illustrates the principle of suffocating the fire by depriving it of oxygen.
Artistic safety methods: Practical safety instructions are given by practicing the technique of ‘Stop, Drop, and Roll’ in case of fire.
Essay competitions and poster competitions on fire safety are organized in schools
