Situated in the Nagpur district of Maharashtra, the Koradi Thermal Power Station (KTPS) stands as one of the state’s most prominent electricity generation projects. The contribution of Maharashtra’s Revenue Minister—and former dynamic Energy Minister—Shri Chandrashekhar Bawankule, has been pivotal in resolving the various hurdles and technical glitches encountered by this power project. Under the expert guidance of the project’s Chief Engineer, Shri Vilas Motghare, all officers and engineering staff are working with exceptional diligence to maximize electricity generation. Furthermore, they are playing a commendable role in ensuring maximum output, conserving oil and water, protecting the environment, and controlling pollution.

It is particularly noteworthy that during the financial year 2024–2025, this power station set a record by generating a total of 13,611.321 million units of electricity. The contribution of the station’s Stage II (3×660 MW) power generation unit has been especially praiseworthy. According to technical experts, this phase of the power plant achieved a Plant Load Factor (PLF) of 70–79%. Meanwhile, in accordance with the standards set by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), an availability of 70.72% and a PLF of 70.13% were recorded. During operational periods, the facility successfully managed to limit auxiliary power consumption to just 6.81% and oil consumption to a mere 0.53 ml per unit. Notably, during the current financial year 2025-2026—specifically up to March 13, 2026—this center recorded a power generation output of 13,425,786 million units, a figure higher than that of the previous year. Furthermore, Unit 10 achieved an Availability Factor (AVF) of 87.70 percent in December 2025. On January 26, 2026, the entire power plant recorded a daily MIRC AVF record of 96.54 percent.

Indeed, operated by MahagenCo, the facility is currently modernizing and expanding its generation capacity through a 1,320 MW (2×660 MW) supercritical expansion project. This plant plays a pivotal role in ensuring a reliable supply of electricity within the region.

A key feature of the Koradi project is its expansion and capacity enhancement strategy: the older units are being decommissioned to make way for the construction of two new 660 MW supercritical units, which are currently under construction. Under the expert guidance of Mr. Abhay Harne, Project Director at Mahanirmiti Co., and under the leadership of Mr. Vivek Rokade—the Chief Engineer in charge of the project under construction—all civil officers, engineers, and staff members are working with immense diligence and dedication on the construction activities. This initiative is set to result in a significant increase in generation capacity during the upcoming financial year 2027-2028, thereby guaranteeing substantial relief to the public in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra from the burden of power load-shedding.

Regarding the major contracts associated with this project, it is worth noting that Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been entrusted with the responsibility of supplying the Boiler-Turbine-Generator (BTG) package for the 2×660 MW project. Additionally, the Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) has entered into a loan agreement amounting to ₹10,560 crore to finance this expansion. Established in 1974, the facility played a pivotal role in pioneering the adoption of the 400kV transmission system within the country. Modern supercritical technology is being utilized to ensure high efficiency, as well as for environmental conservation and pollution control.

This project is of paramount importance to Maharashtra’s energy security, providing a stable power supply for both industry and agriculture. The contribution of Mr. Chandrashekhar Bawankule—currently the Revenue Minister and former Energy Minister of the Government of Maharashtra—in resolving the hurdles faced during the construction of this project has been truly commendable
