Ruling Government Responsible for Farmers’ Black Diwali

Mumbai. The ruling government of Maharashtra has been questioned: Who is responsible for farmers’ Black Diwali?
Vice Chairman Hukumchand Amdhare asked when will cotton procurement centers open this year?
This year, cotton has been sown on 3,835,947 hectares in Maharashtra, including Marathwada. Due to the extension of the import duty concession period by the central government, domestic cotton prices are likely to remain below the guaranteed price. Consequently, the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) was supposed to provide relief to farmers by opening procurement centers. However, since the cotton procurement centers have not yet opened, brokers/traders are purchasing cotton stored in farmers’ homes at extremely low prices to sell before Diwali. Therefore, Mr. Hukumchand Amdhare, Vice Chairman of the Mumbai CRB Committee, accused the ruling government of making this Diwali a Black Diwali for cotton farmers.
Despite US President Donald Trump imposing a 50% tariff on India, the central government has imported American cotton, leaving Indian farmers’ cotton lying around. Therefore, there is a fear that farmers’ cotton will receive a price lower than the guaranteed price. Farmers are dissatisfied because the Central Council of Trade Unions (CCI) has imposed some oppressive terms and conditions for cotton procurement. The delayed arrival of the monsoon and subsequent continuous rains in many parts of Nagpur district have led to a decline in cotton production this year. However, since the central government has not yet decided to open cotton procurement centers, this year’s Diwali has become a dark one for farmers. The oppressive conditions imposed on cotton procurement must be lifted. State market committees are awaiting a decision from the Central Government’s CCI and the State Cooperative Cotton Growers Marketing Federation
